Mentorship Moment: Bonding While Baking

My mentor and I have an amazing relationship. We have definitely grown closer over the years. If I recall correctly, the first time I met her (Ashley), I felt as though we were supposed to interview one another. She is the kind of friend I never knew I wanted or needed.

From walking around her corner of the city and trying food at new places to petting her cats while watching Olympic figure skating videos on YouTube, there is so much to cherish about the opportunity to just settle and have calm conversations about what's on your mind. Having Ashley in my life has made such a difference.

Being a student, tests and exams boggle your mind 24/7. Having a mentor gives me a social outlet to release the academic weight on my shoulders. In addition to the numerous opportunities through Student Sponsor Partners, my mentor has majorly impacted me. I am delighted to say that Ashley has enhanced my love for nature and has helped me push my comfort zone in the most pleasant of ways.

Introducing me to her neighborhood and people she calls family, I have developed communication skills I had not known existed within me. Being involved, grasping practically any opportunity Student Sponsor Partners offers, and spending time with my mentor have all complemented my educational journey and goals nicely.

One of my favorite experiences with my mentor has to be the day we baked oatmeal cookies. I tried my best not to be distracted by the world's most adorable cats in the corner of the room as we worked together on creating the delicious masterpiece. If it were not for her help, surely the cookies would not have turned out so great. While the cookies baked, we watched amazing figure skating performances, an interest I had no clue we shared until that day!

The ding went off, alerting us that the cookies were ready. However, before tasting the cookies, she shared a slice of her latest creation -- pumpkin spice bread. Words cannot describe my love for pumpkin spice, and it turns out I am not the only one, as she also finds it delightful. The cookies came out just right! I even took some home with me. The day was not over; she and I played piano until I had to go home. Since that experience together, baking no longer intimidates me.

Spending time with my mentor is always enlightening -- even now, as we connect virtually. These are challenging times for us all, but it is a comfort to know I'll always have her friendship and support.
