Engineering Tomorrow Lab Sparks Career Interest

On April 19, SSP held a Virtual Engineering Lab with Engineering Tomorrow including volunteers from Global Infrastructure Partners and college engineering students. During this interactive lab, students learned about embedded systems and their enormous presence in today's world, from cell phones to microwave ovens to ATMs. They then had the opportunity to build and code a number of virtual circuits, culminating in the creation of a digital traffic light.

My Experiences, My Dreams, My Career

By: Chelsea, Class of 2023

I decided to join a meeting with SSP and Engineering Tomorrow. This event was about these electrical, civil, and mechanical engineers creating, planning, and contributing to society today. I participated because it drew my interest in having a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in addition to my initial hopes for studying architecture.

Civil engineering captures my attention because it is not just about building tall structures, but also about making a living, jobs, factories, and reconstructing buildings that have been burned or destroyed. In the event, I learned that it can be hard but also fun and challenging, and to me, it was like solving a puzzle to build on to the next step. I am very honored to have received a certificate for my effort, excellence, and creativeness in the meeting!

The positive and knowledgeable responses to all my questions gave me so many ideas on how I can utilize my engineering/architecture career. The session inspired my ideas about who I want and can be in the future . . . I want to be a famous architect with their own business, not only in New York, but also upstate and in my parents' home country of the Dominican Republic. I want to be an architect who receives an award for excellence in my future projects. My main key will always be to remain determined, to reach my goals, to improve and grow each day, to face my fears, and to be grateful.

I hope to inspire the next generation of teenagers who sometimes can feel lost and unsure about what they want to be in the future. Most importantly, I want to inspire them to never look back and always stay focused. Thank you to SSP for allowing me to express my experience and my future career goals here!
