Words Without Speaking

St. Jean Baptiste '21

Meet Jenna. She is my creative friend and a rising senior at St. Jean Baptiste High School. She is a mix of Guyanese, Indian, and Italian. Growing up with hearing-impaired parents, Jenna is fluent in American Sign Language. This influenced her passion for poetry and photography.

She loves poetry because it allows her to write her feelings down in ways that are "hidden."

"I like to disguise my voice and thoughts that usually do not come out while I am talking," Jenna says. Writing about her day and/or something that has impacted her keeps Jenna committed to these hobbies. She finds poetry to be a positive channel for her to comfortably share her emotions and learn more about herself.

Jenna's passion for photography is rooted in the ability to tell a story and express emotion with an image captured through her lens and perspective. She believes in documenting every moment she can.

"Art is beautiful. Art is everywhere and anywhere. And I love capturing it." Taking pictures of friends or places near school or home help Jenna fulfill this passion and get creative photos.

Being a part of Student Sponsor Partners, Jenna is able to attend a school with equipment and guidance at her fingertips. She is constantly inspired by her environment and community.

Through college, Jenna hopes to extend her dreams in either direction. "I would love to plan to take all my poems and incorporate them into a poetry book and publish it," she says. "Going into college to major in photography and being a photographer for concerts and/or magazines would be a dream come true."

The feelings of comfort and fulfillment she gains when taking a picture or putting her thoughts into words of poetry drive her to continue these passions. Through these art forms, Jenna is able to show the world through her eyes.
