Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is Cathedral High School closing?

After a comprehensive financial review, extensive deliberation, and consultation with the Archdiocese of New York, Cathedral High School’s board of trustees concluded that ongoing financial challenges—including declining enrollment, rising operational costs, and limited fundraising success—make it impossible to sustain operations beyond June 2026.

Will my child lose their scholarship?

We hope students will continue with SSP at the selected transfer partner school. This means your student will continue to benefit from: an SSP scholarship to attend a private high school; your SSP mentorship and participation in SSP mentor-mentee events; access to an SSP Engagement Manager, college specialist, and our support staff; our College & Career Planning program, including college tours, essay-writing workshops, etc.; financial literacy programming; the possibility to apply for the Peter M. Flanigan Scholarship; and our mental-health services.

Will my child be able to attend another Catholic school?

Yes, as long as the student remains in good academic standing.

My daughter is affected. Will there be a place for her at another school?

Upon learning of the closure, we immediately began to coordinate with our community to come up with a game plan and secure spots for Cathedral students to transfer to another SSP partner school for the 2026-2027 school year and through the remainder of high school.

When will I know about my child’s placement for next year?

It is our expectation that all SSP Scholars at Cathedral will be transferred to accepting schools by the end of October, with a start date at their new school in September 2026.
