We're excited to announce that SSP mentor and alumnus Kavell has been selected for MENTOR NY's Mentor of the Year Awards. His relationship with his mentee Imran, a junior at Christ the King, started in the midst of the pandemic and their bond continues to grow with every virtual catch up (as well as the in-person ones they have planned!).
Kavell and Imran meet virtually on a bi-weekly basis to discuss their dreams, hobbies, challenges, and outlooks on life. "Kavell is not just a mentor. He is like a big brother, and I know I can count on him for anything," said Imran.
Kavell decided to become a mentor because he understands firsthand the importance of guidance, encouragement, and a healthy connection with a consistent and supportive adult.
"As an alumnus of the SSP program, coming from a single-parent home, I know just how challenging it is to navigate one's identity development, the educational system, and the timelessly complex period of adolescence," he said. “Imran has taught me that consistency is key and sometimes just being present is enough.”
Kavell is among the five New York City mentors to be honored at the virtual awards ceremony presented by JPMorgan Chase on September 23, 2021. The award recipients were selected by a volunteer committee comprised of JPMorgan Chase employees who recognized the unique and powerful mentoring relationships each winning mentor shared with their mentee.
The four other award winners include: Daniel Kasman and Sara Engelhard mentors for Bigs & Littles NYC Mentoring, Jennifer Martinez mentor for EAC Chance to Advance, and Michael Gilhooly mentor for Response to Love Center.
