Charles Guilamo (’03) is set to inspire a new generation of students, even from afar

Charles Guilamo (All Hallows High School, 2003) remembers both the hardships and joy of growing up in the South Bronx. Despite limited resources, high crime rates, many negative influences and pressures, and a lack of resources in the community, Charles always focused on the positive. "Life was a blend of challenges and vibrant community spirit," he recalled. "The streets were always alive with the sounds of children playing, neighbors chatting, and the ever-present hum of city life. Despite the hardships, there was a sense of unity and resilience that defined our neighborhood."

After a 17-year career that has taken him all across the globe, those memories grow increasingly distant. From New York, he went on to study at Vanderbilt University, and his career in the energy industry has taken him across the United States, Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Today, he works with Chevron in Qatar.

But it was his time at All Hallows, made possible through a scholarship from SSP, that he credits for that incredible success. "School was a sanctuary where I could dream beyond the confines of my immediate environment. I remember the excitement of learning new things, the camaraderie with classmates, and the encouragement from teachers who saw potential in every student," he said. "SSP played a crucial role in shaping my aspirations and giving me the tools to pursue them."

He also received guidance from his SSP mentor, Ralph. "Student Sponsor Partners became a beacon of hope and opportunity for me. The program not only provided financial support but also paired me with a mentor who guided me through the ups and downs of my educational journey," Charles said. "My mentor's unwavering belief in my potential was a constant source of motivation."

That's why Charles has committed to give back to SSP and a new generation of students, even from halfway around the globe. This year, with the support of Chevron's matching gift program, Charles signed up to both sponsor and mentor two students from his alma mater. He plans to mentor his students virtually and meet in person when he comes to New York.

"My journey from a pupil in the South Bronx to a sponsor in the SSP program is a testament to the power of education, mentorship, and community. It is a story of resilience, hope, and the enduring impact of giving back," Charles said. "Fast forward 20 years, and I am now a proud sponsor in the SSP program. The opportunity to give back to the community that nurtured me is incredibly fulfilling. I see myself in the students I sponsor, and I am committed to providing them with the same support and encouragement that I received."
