My First Week at CoreVest
By: Jorge Sanchez, SSP Class of 2020
My first week at CoreVest was like entering a world with which I was unfamiliar. That is to say, I felt confused, befuddled, and all the other words that possess the same meaning. Yet, I slowly started to take in all the information I received and at least come to understand the purpose of CoreVest.
Ms. Emily Watts, one of the people who has been guiding me through this internship process, delivered the information concisely, allowing me to gain a good understanding of what goes on. I spent the first three days learning about policies meant to ensure that we provide the best service to our clients, while also learning how to maintain a safe, comfortable work environment for all employees. Every employee must go through this process at the beginning, no matter their status or role within the firm. Those three days, although they were slow, gave me an abundance of valuable, useful information which is necessary within any level of the corporate world.
My reasons for joining CoreVest revolved around the opportunity to finally use my financial and analytical skills in the “real world,” skills that I have come to appreciate throughout my time in university. However, that original “selfish” view did not allow me to realize that this is an entirely different world from that of university, and that I will need to learn and understand the differences between them.
The point of view I had was from six months ago, when SSP invited me to apply for the opportunity and thankfully CoreVest accepted me, but now more than ever, after being hit by reality, I am open to learning just how multi-faceted companies can be. I have come to notice how interconnected CoreVest is and to realize that this may be how the real world functions.
I want to learn the different ways in which I can impact a company that operates in such a niche market, albeit by continuing within the underwriting side of things or learning new skills that could prove to be better than the ones I already have. Although I have a long way to go till the end of the internship, I cannot wait to see how this experience changes me over time.
