Double Duty: Maribel Valenzuela on Serving as Mentor to Two SSP Scholars

Maribel Valenzuela, a mentor with Student Sponsor Partners (SSP) since 2025, is paired with SSP scholars Mia and Miah, both of whom attend the Academy of Mount St. Ursula. The trio met for the first time last May, via Zoom, and have since enjoyed a memorable visit to SUMMIT One Vanderbilt. “The girls were very shy at first,” noted Maribel, “but with each meeting, we continue to build rapport and strengthen our connection.”

An associate program director at a non-profit organization focused on homelessness prevention, where she assists families on the verge of eviction, Maribel was introduced to SSP more than a decade ago, at a presentation at her daughter’s public middle school, and is thrilled to now be part of the organization. According to Maribel, SSP is committed to investing in young people, giving them the tools, support, and encouragement they need to succeed.

This is Maribel’s first time mentoring anyone in a formal capacity, and the experience has reinforced for her the importance of listening, encouragement, and relationship-building, as well as deepened her commitment to advocacy and empowerment. “It is important to be a consistent, supportive presence for young people during such an important stage in their lives,” she underscored. “I am honored to support Mia and Miah as they navigate high school and begin preparing for what lies ahead.”
